Your code basically works for me. I think the problem is that you haven’t loaded jQuery. You need to include a <script> tag to load the jQuery library; for example:
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.4.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
